Emergency Relief Fund
EJN operates an Emergency Relief Fund, set up to help members who are destitute. Part of the fund will be used to engage competent solicitors for EJN members claiming political asylum that cannot access or have exhausted their Legal Aid. Funds raised also go to members in need, to pay for their food, shelter, travel and clothing.
EJN supporters wishing to contribute to the fund for colleagues in need can make payments by standing order or should send cheques payable to Exiled Journalists’ Network (EJN). Please write ERF on the back of your cheque and post to:

Criteria and procedures
Disbursements
Distribution of funds will be determined by a sub-committee appointed by the EJN Management Committee.
Personal information supplied by applicants shall be treated as confidential by the sub- committee.
The sub-committee will report to the EJN Annual General Meeting the number of applications, the number of disbursements, total payments and the balance in the fund.
Applications
Applications for contributions from the fund must be made in writing (including email)
Eligibility
Applications may be received only from media professionals living in exile in the UK. Priority will be given to applicants who are ineligible for any form of State benefits, including housing, healthcare or legal aid.
Applications may also be considered from EJN members whose applications for refugee status have been refused, or who are in desperate need of assistance with the basic necessities of life.
In exceptional circumstances applications from other EJN members may be considered.
Procedures
Once an application has been received the EJN Co-ordinator will seek to ensure that personal contact is made with the applicant at the earliest opportunity.
Applicants will be informed in writing of the sub-committee’s decision.
Recipients from the fund will be reminded that if and when their circumstances improve they should consider making an equivalent contribution to the ERF to enable the EJN to sustain this service to other members.
